Google Search Consoleformerly known as Google Webmaster Tools "is a free service provided by Google to help website owners and SEO specialists monitor and improve their presence in the search results of the famous search engine.

This tool gives you access to a range of data concerning the referencing and performance of a website, including :

  • the number of impressions and clicks generated by a site's pages,
  • the keywords that led to your site being discovered,
  • the indexing status of pages,
  • technical problems and SEO errors that have a negative impact on referencing,
  • changes in performance over time.

Registering and configuring Google Search Console

To start using Google Search Console, you need to register on the site and add the properties representing your website.

To do so, go to the Search Console and sign in with your Google Account (or create one if you don't have one). Then click on "Add a property" and enter the URL of your website.

To check that you are the owner of the added site, Google will offer you several validation methods:

  1. By downloading a file HTML to be placed at the root of your site,
  2. Via a meta tag to be added to the page source code,
  3. By using the Google Analytics,
  4. Through the management of DNS of your domain.

Once you've completed one of these steps, you'll be able to access the Google Search Console features and settings for each of your registered properties.

The "Index coverage" tab allows you to check that all the pages on your site are taken into account by Google during indexing, i.e. that they are present in the search engine's database.

    • Content problems (duplicates, insufficient text, etc.),
    • Problems with the "noindex" tag (which deliberately prevents a page from being indexed).

To do this, go to the "Sitemaps" tab and provide the URL of your XML file hosted on your server.
